It's the day before NaNo starts, so it looks like it's my last chance to post this exercise I've been thinking about since September.
Back when I played in RPGs where we had to design our own characters, sometimes we'd take personality tests online in character. I think this may be a valuable exercise in getting to know any character you create, whether for a game or for a novel. It's not so much for the explanation at the end where the test tells you all about yourself, though that can be useful too. But just going through the questions and thinking in character can make you think about aspects of your character you wouldn't consider otherwise.
Here is a Jung Typology Test: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp
I also looked for Keirsey and Myers-Briggs temperament sorters, but could not find any free ones that don't require you to sign up. Those are also good tests, if you can get ahold of them.
I also wonder if it wouldn't be useful to look for specific tests, e.g. if you are writing a romance novel, look for online quizzes about dating and relationship style. Or if you have a lot of political world-building to do, find a political online quiz. At the very least, it should be fun .)
Feel free to comment with results about your characters. Oh, and Happy Halloween!!!
